Chaperone
Information/Background Checks
Background investigations are
required for all overnight chaperones, volunteers, and
student teachers who have unsupervised access to
students either on or off school property. Unsupervised
access is defined as an adult having
responsibility for a student or students not in the
direct and continuous view of a school staff
member. A background check is required
regardless of how brief the unsupervised time will be.
Background investigations are not
required for day trips unless an adult will have access
or responsibility for a student or students outside the
presence of a school staff member. Current employees
of Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) are not
required to undergo an investigation.
Example:
A chaperone goes to the zoo with the entire class and
then separates from the group with two students with
instructions to meet back with the group at a later
time. During this period they are not in the
presence of a school staff member.
Please note the following change
in procedure:
Background investigations forms
must be submitted online* and a minimum of three
weeks prior to the event. Applicants are required to
review and acknowledge the AACPS screening criteria for
chaperone and volunteer background investigations before
applying for a background check.
The
Office of School Security will notify school principals
of any applicants who are not approved. Principals will
then notify the disapproved applicants of their
application results. Disapproved applicants can contact
Doyle Batten, Supervisor of the Office of School
Security, 410-222-5083, for additional clarification
regarding the disapproval.
