PTO Loves our Instructional Aides!
At Carrillo, we strive to give all the kids a better chance to excel. We are very lucky to have the support of PTO donations to hire and supplement in areas where, at this stage of learning is the most crucial.

We have the best instructional Aides that dig deep to help each and every child grow to their fullest potential! This week we will be showcasing the Instructional Aide Team!

Your PTO donations help fund this area for all Carrillo kids to learn at their best! These ladies know just how to do that.

-Shannon Williams, currently serves as the Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment. She enjoys the privilege of collaborating with teachers to help strengthen our Literacy instruction at Carrillo. Mrs. Williams oversees our Reading Intervention program where they give students an extra dose of reading.

She has a fabulous team of Instructional Aides who work so hard to help our readers at Carrillo. They help students with everything from learning their letters and sounds, understanding phonics rules and building reading comprehension strategies. They even started to offer math support, helping students learn their basic facts!

The best part for her, that it is all done in small groups and students get to work with peers at their same instructional level! She believes it is so important that we can offer these extra reading/math groups for our kids so that they can build their reading skills, become confident readers and find a love for reading!

Her favorite part of the job is being able to work with so many students and see them grow over the course of the school year!

Mrs. Williams joined the Carrillo family in 2015. This will be her 6th year at Carrillo. Prior to being at Carrillo she was a Math Teacher on Special Assignment with the district for 2 years, helping develop and teach math curriculum with the new Common Core State Standards. Before that she taught both third and fourth grade at San Elijo Elementary for eight years. She is a San Diego native, grew up in Vista and graduated with her Masters Degree from Point Loma Nazarene University. Her and her family feel so fortunate to be at San Marcos schools. They have a kindergartener and a second grader and her husband teaches physical education in the district. We are so lucky to have her at Carrillo.

-Jennifer Larochelle, has been at Carrillo for 18 years. This year she is an Instructional Aide for TK & K (Mearns & Schmeiser). She is co-director for the Leo Carrillo Singers (choir) and she helps all the teachers with any tech issues.

Mrs. Larochelle, is a jack of all trades and even controls the music on flag salutes and when we had special recesses with music. She always managed the sound in the multi-purpose room and for the plays w/ Mrs. Broyles.

In years past, she has been a math intervention specialist, the computer lab aide, and the music teacher. She has a Bachelors in music with a communicative disorders minor.

She has a CA k-8 multiple subject teaching credential with a music supplement and a Masters in Educational Leadership along with a preliminary administrative credential.

Her favorite thing about helping kids at Carrillo is that “aha” moment. That moment when they get something for the first time.

She loves seeing the kids faces when they learn something new or a different way to do something, and she loves helping the kids reach their goals, whether it’s with writing, math, or singing. Carrillo is her home and she is so proud to be part of it.

-Kelley Carlstrom has been a wonderful part of the San Marcos school district for 12 years! In the beginning, she was able to volunteer while her sons attended Carrillo enjoying every minute helping in the classrooms. While at Carrillo, she has worn several hats. Mrs. Carlstrom started as a supervisor on the playground. Supervising was fun for her because you get to interact with the kids when they are having fun playing.  During that time as well, she organized the after school enrichment programs. This was an exciting job for her and she enjoyed finding instructors to teach classes such as cooking, art, archery, and flag football for the students to participate in after school.  She then became certified to help in the health office, which she still does on occasion.  Helping to make our kids feel better, excited for them when the lost their first tooth, or comforting them until their parents came to pick them up is so rewarding to her.

Her final resting spot is Reading Intervention. What she thoroughly enjoys about Reading Intervention, is that she is a part of the learning process with the students.  Prior positions she has “helped”, now she feels like she is a part of their learning. Mrs. Carlstrom works with an amazing team, and enjoys working with students in a small groups.  Her greatest joy is when she sees the students have an Ah- ha moments or helping the shy quite student come out of their shell and becomes confident and comfortable in their academic journey.

She is also part of the high school PTO, where her youngest son is a senior. Mrs. Carlstrom say, "It has been exciting to watch all our Carrillo kids grow into amazing teenagers.  We are fortunate to live in a community and school district that fosters the relationships through each milestone in their education career.  Go SMUSD ! Go Colts, Go Eagles, Go Knights !" The Carrillo Family is so grateful for her and we love watching her teach our students.

-Liz Hendricks has been to be part of the Instructional Aide team for 11 years. She works alongside teachers helping students to reach their full potential by providing individualized support. Mrs. Hendricks believes childhood is an incredibly formative time in a person's life and having as much support and guidance, especially in reading, builds a solid foundation that helps a child succeed in the future and she loves to provide a smile as needed so that they in turn can share with others.

A  San Diego State University graduate and mom to three awesome kids, Mrs. Hendricks truly enjoys lifting her kids up as well as the kids at Carrillo so they can grow and learn in the best environment.

Mrs. Hendricks loves being a part of a community that works so diligently to create a healthy, happy, positive, learning environment during such important years of their childhood. She knows how important this type of community is for her own three children, and she is so grateful to have been able to witness and especially be a part of the amazing growth that happens when children are provided with specialized small group instruction designed for their needs.

Being able to provide them with tools and strategies for learning and then watching their confidence and success grow as they apply them is the greatest gift to her! Mrs. Hendricks also feels that one of the best parts of helping the children of Carrillo is seeing their happy smiling faces. We sure do love seeing the smiles she brings!

-Mona Patel is a Reading Intervention aide. She works within the classroom or in the resource classroom to help students and their teachers by providing support, adapting lessons as needed, and working with individuals or small groups of students on things such as reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. She assess each student's literacy levels, designs and implements a plan to help each student learn more efficiently.
Mrs. Patel works in several areas at Carrillo Elementary. Reading Intervention is her primary position, and during other hours, she also works in the front office, in the health office and subs for the attendance clerk & office manager.

She enjoys working with students to help them develop proficient reading skills that will contribute to their academic growth. She also enjoys seeing the kids eyes light up once they make a positive connection, and loves teaching because of the warm feeling of satisfaction experienced when "the light goes on" and the student excels in reading.

Mrs. Patel has 2 children who attended Carrillo Elementary since Kindergarten. Her son Devin Patel is 17 years old now and is a senior. Her daughter Mira Patel is 15 years old and is a Sophomore at San Marcos High School.

Mrs. Patel. has been a Reading Intervention aide at Carrillo since 2013, and has been a substitute teacher and participated in many ways since 2002. Her Teaching Career began in Arizona as a 2nd & 3rd grade teacher at El Dorado Private school in 2001. Shortly after Carrillo was able to get her in and we have never let her go. Mrs. Patel is an incredible part of our Carrillo Staff.

-Melissa Lane is a reading intervention aide. She works with small groups of students on reading comprehension, phonics, and math skills.
Mrs. Lane joined the Carrillo family last year. She found that Carrillo is just that...a family! The positivity and dedication that everyone brings each day is so inspiring to her!
Before teaching at Carrillo, she worked at Discovery Elementary as a Special Education aide starting in 2012.  During that time, she was able to work one-on-one with students and teach reading intervention to kindergarteners.
Mrs. Lane grew up in Orange County and graduated from Cal State University, Fullerton with her Bachelors Degree and Teaching Credential. She taught 1st grade in Orange County before her and her family moved to Oceanside and joined the San Marcos School District. She has a son in six the grade and daughter in second.
Mrs. Lane loves being able to work with students of all ages in a small group setting. She enjoys being able to connect with them on a personal level, so she can get to know them even better and help meet their individual needs.  It brings so much joy to her to watch them grow and become more confident students. We are so lucky to have her here at Carrillo!
