-Shannon Williams, currently serves as the Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment. She enjoys the privilege of collaborating with teachers to help strengthen our Literacy instruction at Carrillo. Mrs. Williams oversees our Reading Intervention program where they give students an extra dose of reading.
She has a fabulous team of Instructional Aides who work so hard to help our readers at Carrillo. They help students with everything from learning their letters and sounds, understanding phonics rules and building reading comprehension strategies. They even started to offer math support, helping students learn their basic facts!
The best part for her, that it is all done in small groups and students get to work with peers at their same instructional level! She believes it is so important that we can offer these extra reading/math groups for our kids so that they can build their reading skills, become confident readers and find a love for reading!
Her favorite part of the job is being able to work with so many students and see them grow over the course of the school year!
Mrs. Williams joined the Carrillo family in 2015. This will be her 6th year at Carrillo. Prior to being at Carrillo she was a Math Teacher on Special Assignment with the district for 2 years, helping develop and teach math curriculum with the new Common Core State Standards. Before that she taught both third and fourth grade at San Elijo Elementary for eight years. She is a San Diego native, grew up in Vista and graduated with her Masters Degree from Point Loma Nazarene University. Her and her family feel so fortunate to be at San Marcos schools. They have a kindergartener and a second grader and her husband teaches physical education in the district. We are so lucky to have her at Carrillo.
-Jennifer Larochelle, has been at Carrillo for 18 years. This year she is an Instructional Aide for TK & K (Mearns & Schmeiser). She is co-director for the Leo Carrillo Singers (choir) and she helps all the teachers with any tech issues.
Mrs. Larochelle, is a jack of all trades and even controls the music on flag salutes and when we had special recesses with music. She always managed the sound in the multi-purpose room and for the plays w/ Mrs. Broyles.
In years past, she has been a math intervention specialist, the computer lab aide, and the music teacher. She has a Bachelors in music with a communicative disorders minor.
She has a CA k-8 multiple subject teaching credential with a music supplement and a Masters in Educational Leadership along with a preliminary administrative credential.
Her favorite thing about helping kids at Carrillo is that “aha” moment. That moment when they get something for the first time.
She loves seeing the kids faces when they learn something new or a different way to do something, and she loves helping the kids reach their goals, whether it’s with writing, math, or singing. Carrillo is her home and she is so proud to be part of it.
-Kelley Carlstrom has been a wonderful part of the San Marcos school district for 12 years! In the beginning, she was able to volunteer while her sons attended Carrillo enjoying every minute helping in the classrooms. While at Carrillo, she has worn several hats. Mrs. Carlstrom started as a supervisor on the playground. Supervising was fun for her because you get to interact with the kids when they are having fun playing. During that time as well, she organized the after school enrichment programs. This was an exciting job for her and she enjoyed finding instructors to teach classes such as cooking, art, archery, and flag football for the students to participate in after school. She then became certified to help in the health office, which she still does on occasion. Helping to make our kids feel better, excited for them when the lost their first tooth, or comforting them until their parents came to pick them up is so rewarding to her.
Her final resting spot is Reading Intervention. What she thoroughly enjoys about Reading Intervention, is that she is a part of the learning process with the students. Prior positions she has “helped”, now she feels like she is a part of their learning. Mrs. Carlstrom works with an amazing team, and enjoys working with students in a small groups. Her greatest joy is when she sees the students have an Ah- ha moments or helping the shy quite student come out of their shell and becomes confident and comfortable in their academic journey.
She is also part of the high school PTO, where her youngest son is a senior. Mrs. Carlstrom say, "It has been exciting to watch all our Carrillo kids grow into amazing teenagers. We are fortunate to live in a community and school district that fosters the relationships through each milestone in their education career. Go SMUSD ! Go Colts, Go Eagles, Go Knights !" The Carrillo Family is so grateful for her and we love watching her teach our students.
-Liz Hendricks has been to be part of the Instructional Aide team for 11 years. She works alongside teachers helping students to reach their full potential by providing individualized support. Mrs. Hendricks believes childhood is an incredibly formative time in a person's life and having as much support and guidance, especially in reading, builds a solid foundation that helps a child succeed in the future and she loves to provide a smile as needed so that they in turn can share with others.
A San Diego State University graduate and mom to three awesome kids, Mrs. Hendricks truly enjoys lifting her kids up as well as the kids at Carrillo so they can grow and learn in the best environment.
