From Chris Wood*, organizer of the LDC Community Meeting:
Please join us on Tuesday, October 29th from 6pm-8pm at the Shelby Community Center to discuss potential policy solutions that can help ensure Lockeland Design Center’s many successes and achievements are accessible to students throughout the Geographic Priority Zone.
LDC is a lottery-admission, magnet elementary school in East Nashville that was recently designated a National Blue Ribbon School by the Department Of Education. LDC offers a high-quality education and consistently ranks among the best elementary schools in Tennessee for superior academic achievement. The talent and commitment of its leadership, teachers, and staff is evident to all those who are a part of this wonderful community.
Over the last 10+ years, however, the racial and socioeconomic make-up of LDC’s student population has changed dramatically, becoming much more homogeneous. Today, the student body at LDC no longer reflects the make-up of the Geographic Priority Zone (which stretches across a broad section of East Nashville) it was intended to serve. To be sure, this is not a phenomenon unique to LDC. But we, the members of East Nashville’s diverse and progressive community, are uniquely positioned to help address it.
MNPS’ Diversity Resolution recognizes that “quality, diverse schools at all grade levels are indispensable to the civic and educational purpose of this School District.” Please join parents, school leaders, MNPS officials and our local elected representatives to discuss what steps our community can take to more fully contribute to this important goal.
