 FAQ

What is the Las Palmas PTA Book Club? The club emphasizes reading for fun in a social setting.  It is open to all skill levels for students in grades 2nd-5th. Students are encouraged to read the books at home, or have parents read to them, and come prepared to discuss the book with their small group.

BOOKS – How are the books selected?

Books are selected from literature sources such as: library lists, books used in other school clubs, and leader suggestions. The books on the list are chosen because we hope they are fun to read and because they have the potential for lively and interesting discussion.  Some books may be above or below your child’s reading level, so students may choose to read the books independently or with their parents.

LEADERS – Who leads the discussion groups?

Parent volunteers lead the discussion groups. There is no teaching experience necessary! Methods for engaging different personalities in a supportive manner are an important component of leading a book club. This is a great forum to participate in the LP Community, exchange ideas and team up with others. The clubs last for 1 hour after school.  Leaders read the book and lead activities for the group, typically 8-12 students.  Snacks are always a big hit! There is lots of help available if you want ideas for activities, or help with snacks.  Feel free to sign up with a partner too, it is always more fun with a friend. Our volunteers make it fun for the kids, while having fun themselves – come and join us!
